Google appears to be preparing to address one of the most requested features for its Gemini ecosystem by adding the ability to share Gems. In a recent update to the Gemini web interface, a new share button was spotted inside the Gem Studio interface. This suggests that users will soon be able to distribute their custom Gems to others, potentially opening the door for a broader and more practical use of the platform. While details remain scarce, internal code references indicate that this feature is being built—but it’s still unclear whether it will launch for individual users or remain limited to enterprise accounts.

Gems in Gemini function similarly to custom GPTs on OpenAI’s platform: they allow users to craft reusable prompt templates tied to specific model behaviors. However, unlike OpenAI’s offerings, Gems currently can’t be shared, which has limited their traction. Enterprise users have particularly pushed for this functionality, as it would let teams standardize prompts or workflows across users. Sharing could also help hobbyists and developers exchange Gems without the friction of recreating logic from scratch.

In addition to the share button, prior findings pointed to another incoming capability: tagging Gems from within a prompt—similar to invoking extensions—suggesting Google is inching toward a more modular AI usage model. Both features would reduce friction for power users and teams looking to scale their Gemini workflows.

Although no official timeline has been confirmed, the timing of this discovery aligns with Google I/O preparations. If this Gemini feature reaches personal accounts, it could help Google close the usability gap with OpenAI’s more visible custom GPTs. Whether this will be highlighted during I/O is still uncertain, especially since the feature seems to be in early rollout stages.
